Bucket of Oya

Traditional Uses of Oya

Oya Headscarf Bridegroom's scarf Oya Scarf

Oya is the name given to the needle lace flowers that adorn all parts of traditional Turkish costumes from women's head scarves to bridegroom's headdresses to the fronts of tunics.  Every flower and every color tell a story.  For example, a purple hyacinth indicates a girl in love, a pink hyacinth indicates an engaged girl, and a white hyacinth represents fidelity.

At Deli Kizin Yeri oya is used in all sorts of untraditional ways - combined with old jewelry to make pins, added as accents on purses and shawls, and strung with beads for Christmas ornaments.
